Ramon Baez, 33, of Gardner was arrested Tuesday, Aug. 11, outside of the Super 8 hotel in Gardner, Massachusetts State Police said.

Baez is a suspect in the Aug. 2 shooting of a 30-year-old Fitchburg man between 2 Pritchard Street and Fitchburg Place Apartments, police said. The victim was shot in the leg and the bullet hit his femoral artery. Massachusetts State Police said responding officers likely saved the victim’s life by applying a tourniquet before emergency medical personnel arrived on the scene.

When Massachusetts State Troopers learned Baez was staying at the hotel, they called in the departments’ Special Tactical Operations (STOP) Team.

As Baez came out of the lobby, police made the arrest without incident, police said.

Baez is being charged with several warrants including one for attempted murder, assault and battery with a firearm, and related firearms’ offenses in connection with the Aug. 2 shooting. He was also charged with several other warrants charging him with, among other offenses, indecent assault and battery, breaking and entering, larceny, possession of a silencer, and motor vehicle crimes, police said.

When police searched Baez, they allegedly found a 9MM handgun with a 16-round clip in his fanny pack, 13 grams of cocaine, and 6 grams of heroin. Police are examining the gun to see if it was the same one used in the Aug. 2 shooting.
